Attorney Lew has dedicated his professional life to serving others and increasing civil access to justice. In 2007, he accepted the inaugural "Citizen Lawyer" Award from the North Carolina Bar Association (NCBA) for his exemplary public service work in the state. In 2021, he received the NCBA William L. Thorp Pro Bono Service Award given to a practicing attorney who has provided ongoing, substantial legal services to clients that could not otherwise afford legal counsel. He is a member of the North Carolina Pro Bono Honor Society and has received numerous other honors for his pro bono legal work with immigrants, self-help organizations, and underserved members of the community. He is known as a devoted mentor to a generation of attorneys and law students in the state emphasizing the importance of pro bono work in the legal profession.

From 2003 to 2006, Attorney Lew served as a Citizen Commissioner for the City of Winston-Salem on two community boards. In 2022, Attorney Lew was a candidate for the North Carolina House of Representatives District 74 as a strong advocate for public education promoting increased teacher pay, support staff, and fully funding the Leandro Comprehensive Remedial Plan. He received the full endorsement from the Forsyth County Association of Educators (FCAE) and the statewide North Carolina Association of Educators (NCAE).
